Curriculum Statement - English

English

Introduction

English combines the study of reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Students are exposed to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction genres and learn to produce texts for different audiences and purposes.

The main aims of the English curriculum are:

  • To allow students to become competent and accurate users of the English language, who can communicate clearly and effectively in a range of different situations.
  • To nurture students’ creative skills in order that they can use language to produce new meanings and effects.
  • To enhance students’ cultural understanding so that they have a full and coherent appreciation of British and world literature.
  • To develop students’ critical capacities so that they are able to analyse and evaluate a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, and become confident media consumers and communicators.

Key Stage 3

Students are taught in single sex and mixed ability classes from Years 7 to 9 in English.  The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to give students a strong foundation in key areas of Literature, across a range of time periods and genres, in order to prepare them for the demands of GCSE and to instil a love and enjoyment of reading and analysing literature.  In addition, students are taught key writing skills across Key Stage 3, using Debra Myhill’s Skills for Writing approach developed at the University of Exeter.  This approach develops students’ confidence and understanding in using key components of grammar for specific effects.  Students at Key Stage 3 also have one lesson per week dedicated to the Let’s Think in English programme.  These lesson focus on developing students’ critical thinking skills through discussion.
