Trip to Tate Modern for Year 9 and 10 Posted: 25/10/24
In the past two weeks, our Year 9 and Year 10 Art students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Tate Modern, not only to visit the permanent collections but also for the temporary exhibition: Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and the Blue Rider. This experience not only allowed them to explore a rich array of artworks but also to engage in creative practice through sketching and creating artist studies directly in the gallery spaces.
The students were thrilled to draw inspiration from iconic pieces and to develop their understanding of expressionism. For our Year 9s, this trip aligns perfectly with their current painting project titled Painting: Personality and Place, where they will explore how their surroundings and identities intertwine. By studying the emotive qualities of expressionist art, they can deepen their insights and apply these concepts in their own work.
Meanwhile, our Year 10 students were focusing on their personal GCSE projects in which they are each responding to a theme of their choice. The trip was particularly valuable as they were able to see how established artists tackle themes and ideas, giving them fresh perspectives to inform their projects.
A highlight of the trip was the chance to visit the new Turbine Hall installation. The students were captivated by the scale and movement of the piece, which sparked lively discussions about contemporary art's role and impact. Experiencing the artworks firsthand allowed them to appreciate the curation process and how the presentation of art can transform its meaning.
Overall, the trip to Tate Modern was not just an outing; it was an enriching learning experience that will contribute significantly to our students' artistic development. We are excited to see how they will integrate what they have learned into their upcoming projects in art lessons. Thank you to all the staff who made this trip possible.
