British Sign Language Enrichment Posted: 6/12/24
I am delighted to share the fantastic progress of the BSL Enrichment class! Since September, students have learned to introduce themselves and sign about their families and favourite hobbies. With the help of an online BSL dictionary, they have been personalising their conversations, looking up new signs as they go.
Students have also been signing along to songs such as ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley. This is a fun way to enjoy BSL while practising rhythm and expression. Signed Bingo and the Fingerspelling Challenge are also popular activities that help students practise their receptive skills. (You can ‘try your hand’ at the Fingerspelling Challenge at home by visiting www.british-sign.co.uk)
We have also enjoyed exploring BSLZone, a fantastic TV channel made by and for the Deaf community. Watching real-world examples of BSL in use - especially the popular game show ‘Sign 2 Win’ - has given them a deeper appreciation for Deaf culture and Deaf experiences. (Families can also check out BSLZone at home by visiting www.bslzone.co.uk.)
Many people assume that BSL is simply "signing along" to English, but in fact, BSL is a language with its own unique grammar and syntax. Students have taken this in their stride, while also incorporating facial expressions and correct lip patterns - essential tools for communicating in BSL.
Watching the students’ enthusiasm and dedication has been inspiring and I could not be prouder of their hard work!
